French President's Bank Account Hacked

If you thought Sarah Palin's e-mail being hacked was interesting...

"Cyberthieves have stolen money from the personal bank account of France's president, Nicolas Sarkozy.

The criminals reportedly managed to obtain Sarkozy's online username and password, and removed several small sums of money from the account.

Reports state Sarkozy noticed that small amounts of money had disappeared from his account last month, and informed the police of the losses."

  1. Although the consequences are negative for Sarkozy (and Palin in the earlier case), these attacks could serve as warnings to others. Because of the victims' positions, the cases are very well publicized, however these kind of attacks are something that could happen to anybody. The majority of people have email and a bank account. As a result, this could serve as a warning to people at all levels. People in higher positions may realize that they need to take better precautions to protect their information from attack. The average person may understand that they could just as easily be a target as a public figure.

I'd be curious to find out if the accused knew who the bank account belonged to. The latest report I could find said that a young couple are the accused and a third person is being detained (probably only because the account was Sarkozy's). It wasn't suspected that the accused knew it was the French President's account.

Palin is in the process of pursuing a lawsuit against David Kernell, a college student who supposedly hacked into her email account. He could potentially face a fine and jail time. If he is found guilty and the consequences are severe enough, perhaps it will serve as a warning to other hackers. However, I think it will take a lot more to deter these kind of hackers.

  2. Even though these attacks remain warnings for bigger events. how is it that higher status people are some much of a target. The more and more famous you are the more and more hackers are thrilled to try you. Why aren't these higher status people trying to protect themselves more?
